If you can eat gluten, congratulations. But if you’re like me and can’t eat gluten (side note to gluten eaters: No this is not a lifestyle choice of mine, who would choose not to eat gluten!?), it can be a real pain finding gluten friendly food spots when you’re on vacation. When you’re gluten intolerant or coeliac, you become a walking, talking food guide of all food safe spots within your city of residence. But on vacation, it’s a whole different ball game, and I for one don’t want to spend my holiday walking around looking for something to eat that won’t make me ill. That and being a major foodie, means I spend hours surfing the internet to find the most delicious gluten free spots before jumping on the plane.
New York is such a forward thinking city, and one that is full of healthy eating cafes and restaurants, so I knew my lack of gluten eating wouldn’t be an issue once I got there. I just didn’t want to eat average gluten free food, I wanted kick arse, awesome, ‘are you sure there isn’t gluten in this?!’ food. So I did my homework online, and then I walked for miles, and ate everything on my list. Whether you eat gluten or not, this list is for everyone, because every single thing I ate was super tasty, and nothing looked or tasted like cardboard, which lets face it, sadly that’s the case with some gluten free foods!
A bakery with various locations around NYC and Brooklyn, with both regular and gluten free options. Get the cookies!!
O.M.G I love this place soooo much! With various locations around the city, they sell delicious, healthy foods from superfood smoothies (get the Bulldozer!) to healthy snacks.
I recommend the Gluten free/Dairy Free French Toast from Liquiteria, and pick up some RX Bars too for munching on throughout the day.
When in New York, you’ve gotta have a bagel right?! Tompkins Square Bagels offer both regular and gluten free options, and more toppings and spreads than you can possibly imagine. The Birthday Cake Cream Cheese caught my eye, having seen it a lot on Instagram, so I went with it! Super sweet, but hey it’s vacation!
Oh Erin McKenna’s Bakery, this was my Gluten Free in NYC highlight! I’ll start weeping if I think about her bakery too much, both tears of happiness at how bloody good everything was, and also tears of sadness that Erin doesn’t have a bakery in London!
They say: ‘We focus on the underserved – people with gluten, dairy, egg, and soy sensitivities, the health-minded, and, most importantly, allergic kids who are often unable to indulge. We select all ingredients responsibly and use our natural sweeteners sparingly. Our goal is to make eating vegan and gluten-free fun and delicious’.
HalleFRICKENlujah! It’s not until you develop an intolerance or allergy to foods that you truly realise how much you miss out on, simply because it contains dairy, or gluten, or soy (all of which I have issues with WAH!). So Erin’s bakery was like all my Christmas’s had come at once.
Get a cinnamon bun (that’s the one above with the pink icing!) and a Samoa Donut (below). Sorry massive chat about this spot, but it so deserves the praise!
With a bakery in Brooklyn and stalls at various food markets, selling cookies, cakes, and other baked goods, both regular and gluten free.
With various locations around NYC, Otto’s Tacos are gluten free, and so are their Masa Fries, which you need to try!
When you’re going to watch baseball as a tourist, indulging in a hotdog is part of the experience. The good news is that there’s a Gluten Free Hot Dog Stand at the Yankees Stadium. How awesome is that!
If you like Mexican, you’ll love this, gluten free or not. You can read more about it here in my recent blog post.
So there we have it, Gluten Free in NYC, are you hungry now?!
