I wasn’t always a coffee snob, I promise. I mean, I started my coffee drinking journey in my early twenties at that big famous American chain, Starbucks, where I would sip on skinny vanilla lattes until I slowly graduated to cappuccinos and flat whites. But now I am officially, and proudly, a massive coffee snob! Maybe it’s in my Antipodean blood, the Aussies and the Kiwis have a real thing about making and drinking great coffee, and I would rather drink the instant Nescafe in my kitchen, than a burnt tasting Starbucks any day.
When I booked my flights to The Big Apple back in March, I immediately started researching where to locate great coffee in NYC. New Yorkers have a thing for buying their morning take out from Dunkin’ Donuts, and I just wasn’t going to accept that as my choice of daily caffeine, eurgh! Soon enough, I’d built up a decent list of coffee shops around Manhattan, that meant whichever neighbourhood I stumbled upon, I’d be able to grab a latte that didn’t taste like dish water.
I’m sharing my research here with you, so you don’t have to visit Dunkin’ Donuts either, unless of course you love their coffee, and in that case, go right ahead! So let’s get on to the good stuff, 5 Places for Great Coffee in NYC…
The Wooly Daily
11 Barclay St, New York, NY 10007
Located downtown, close to The World Trade Centre and discount shopping department store Century 21, this tiny little coffee shop makes great coffee! I popped in twice during my three week stay. The interior is super cool, and you’ll want to make sure you grab an Ovenly cookie to go with that cup of caffeine.
19 8th Avenue, New York, NY 10014
I have to admit, this hadn’t been on my list, but timing was everything on a rainy day in the West Village, when my umbrella was blowing inside out and I really wanted an almond milk latte. I spotted Rebel Coffee and high tailed it in. My coffee was great, the cafe was cosy and cool, with the odd Macbook freelancer typing away, oh and really delicious looking donuts in the glass cabinet!
Blue Bottle Coffee
160 Berry St, Brooklyn, NY 11249
Blue Bottle Coffee has eight locations in Manhattan and Brooklyn. I visited their original cafe, the Williamsburg branch on a sunny Saturday and ordered an iced coffee. It was fab. The cafe also houses a training lab and roasting facility. These guys know how to do coffee.
394 Broome St, New York, NY 10013
A little bit patriotic over this spot, Happy Bones is the brainchild of Kiwis! But that’s not the only reason I’m adding this to my Great Coffee in NYC list. They make really rad coffee. You only need to see the line of customers to know this place is popular. I visited twice, once for a latte and once for an iced coffee, both were ace!
667 Lexington Ave, New York, NY 10022
Another Antipodean spot, but this time it’s thanks to the Aussies. This was my first take out coffee on my current trip to New York, so it had to A. be great and B. combat my jetlag. It definitely did both, and it had a great food menu too if you wanted to rest your feet from pounding the New York sidewalk.
Although I don’t have any photos, I must mention a sixth spot, Toby’s Estate. With multiple locations around the city, I popped into their Flatiron Espresso Bar a couple of times during my trip for an almond milk latte, and it’s definitely one to add to your coffee snob list.
So there we have it, 5 Places for Great Coffee in NYC. Enjoy!
