No! Do you hear me? You WILL NOT end up looking like this woman. That woman has spent more hours in the gym than you’ve had hot showers, and consumed more calories than you could even begin to imagine.
If I had a dollar for every time someone has said to me ‘You take protein powder?! But you’ll bulk up!’ I would be looking at an early retirement. Okay slight exaggeration, but you get my point. There are many different types of protein powder on the market, different brands, different sources, you name it. And it can be confusing!
Why do I take protein powder? For me personally, it’s another alternative to eating chicken, fish, turkey or eggs. I love that I can make a chocolate protein shake that gives me the same protein hit as a chicken breast but tastes like dessert. Protein helps my muscles recover, rebuild and strengthen after a gym workout and lean protein is a food source that fills you up without filling out your hips. All sounds okay so far right?
The first thing I will say, do not feel that you need to purchase a ‘female only’ protein powder. I have never once made this purchase, because I really don’t see the point of it. They like to market female only products as diet enhancers by throwing in an ingredient such as green tea extract. Waste of time, just do more squats at the gym!
I purchase a powder that is high in protein and very low in carbohydrates. If you DO want to bulk, go for one that has a higher carb content.
Where do I purchase my powder? Online. Always. The best deals are always found there, but it’s not always about the cheapest price. Flavour is a huge factor. I will be the first to admit some brands taste unbelievably bad, so it’s important to find one you like. I purchase mine at My Protein and this is the powder I purchase.
If you’re intolerant to dairy, eggs, soya etc you can find one to suit your needs as there are different types of powders derived from various protein sources, Wikipedia explains it a little further here.
So that is some basic info on protein powder, there is a whole lot more I could chat about – post gym recovery shakes, pre-bedtime shakes, but lets not complicate matters!
If you’re worried about ‘bulking up’ put down the pasta, eat less pizza and drink a protein shake, it’s the path to looking lean and feeling good.
