PICK YOUR OWN FRUIT AND VEGETABLES IN SURREY
When you live in a busy, heavily populated city, simple things like a vegetable patch or an apple orchard are a complete novelty. When Halloween was approaching, I wanted to visit a Pumpkin Patch, and after some Google searching I came across Garsons in Esher, Surrey.
We drove down to Garsons on a sunny Saturday morning, and I was super excited about this little expedition! You do really need a car to pick your own vegetables and fruit due to the sheer size of the place.
We drove in, and head towards the strawberry patch, grabbing a little bucket and beginning our fruit picking. We got so into it, looking for the biggest, brightest strawberries and before we knew it our bucket was filling up quickly, so we had to restrain ourselves and move on to the next garden.
The next stop was what I’d been most looking forward to, the Pumpkin Patch. I’d never seen a pumpkin patch before so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I had grand plans of finding the very best looking pumpkin to carve into a Jack-o-Lantern. We jumped out of the car and walked into the patch, which was covered in huge orange pumpkins every which way we looked. We’d find a perfect pumpkin, only to walk a few metres, and then find a better one. It was overwhelming and super, super fun. If you’re into picking pumpkins that is ;o)
Pumpkins picked, we moved on to our search for broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and corn. Another first, walking through a corn field, and having seen one too many horror movies in my time, I know damn well I would not want to be strolling through there after dark!
Onto the beetroot garden and finally some raspberry picking, we weighed and paid for our goods. The car boot was heaving, and we didn’t really think through the fact that we’d have to find freezer space for most of it!
My pumpkin made the best Jack-o-Lantern for Halloween last night, as we opened the door to excited trick-or-treaters. We sipped on soup in between door knocks, made from the broccoli and cauliflower we’d also picked.
If you have access to a car, I really recommend paying a visit to Garsons, you can even pick your own flowers. As soon as we’ve grilled the corn and made chilli butter to smother it in, meaning the freezer will then have space again, I’ll be planning a return!
