Detour | Leaf Peeping in Woodstock, Vermont

Ever been on vacation to a place that has you thinking about it long after you’ve left?  That’s how I feel about Woodstock, Vermont.  When researching for my New England trip, time and time again Woodstock showed up as a must-visit spot for a Fall leaf peeping trip.  Something about the place captivated me from the moment I started Googling it, and I created the rest of the trip around this dreamy town.

Leaving the stunning Hill Farm Inn, in Manchester Vermont, we head north to Woodstock for three days/two nights.  As we drove into town, it was confirmed, I was in love with the place and it was just how it looked on all the websites I’d researched.  It’s one of those picture perfect places that would be dreamy in every season.

For our stay in Woodstock, I’d researched Airbnb and my eyes were drawn to a place called The Cluck House.  A ‘tiny house’ converted from a chicken coop sounded both quirky and interesting, it looked adorable and the host had 5 stars.  So I booked.

We arrived at The Cluck House early evening, (the photo above is the road next to the driveway!) and were greeted by a super friendly young teenager called Nick.  Nick and his mum Tina run the Airbnb together.  He introduced us to some of the other guests staying on the property, and then we head back into town to pick up some groceries for dinner.

Although there were cooking facilities in The Cluck House, (photos above and below, I mean CUTE or what!!), we decided to be a little more social and hang out with everyone in the main house.

Tina arrived home from work, and over the next couple of nights we spent such enjoyable evenings with her, Nick and the other guests.  It was instantly clear why there were five stars on the Airbnb profile!  Tina if you’re reading this, thank you for our wonderful evenings spent together, and our lovely, interesting conversations.  I think of you and Nick often, you were both such a true highlight of my trip!

I think it goes without saying that I recommend this Woodstock, Vermont Airbnb ;o)  The location is super close to Woodstock and in a beautiful secluded area, with a lovely little lake (photo above) on the property and the most spectacular views as the sun rises in the morning.

Over our three days we fit in as much as we possibly could, whilst drinking sooo many pumpkin spice lattes   – Mon Vert Cafe is the place to go for these, they were the best we had on our entire trip.

Walking through town, you’ll discover the most beautiful stores, some favourites being RT Home – a beautiful homeware store with some fab Halloween decorations, F.H. Gillingham & Sons – open since 1886 selling everything you can imagine from maple syrup to camping gear to beautiful tea towels.

For the foodies amongst us, we loooooved the Woodstock Farmers Market, a short drive out of town, it’s like a mini Wholefoods, with everything from ready to eat sandwiches and salads, to the most amazing indie brands of food, cakes, maple syrup, you name it.  And during Fall, the front of the store is surrounded by pumpkins and gourds of every colour and shape possible.

We also loved The Village Butcher, in the centre of town, which is a butcher, but also a deli, with the most incredible sandwiches made to order.  Do not miss this place if you’re hungry!

Other favourite spots in Woodstock, Vermont included a walk through the gorgeous Woodstock Inn with that amazing flowerbed at the entrance.  It’s one of many beautiful hotels/inn’s in the town, and if you’re a fan of architecture and generally looking at houses, a walk off the main road will have you seeing sooo many picture perfect homes.

Speaking of homes, one of the best bits about visiting during the Fall season is the effort residents go to when it comes to decorating their house for pumpkin/halloween season.  It was so amazing!  I dream of visiting over the festive season, which I’m sure would be just as impressive.

Woodstock, Vermont is a great place to base yourself for day trips around Vermont.  We spent a day doing a huge drive north west of Woodstock, visiting some really pretty little towns including Rochester, Bristol and Shelburne.

Another must-visit spot for me was Sleepy Hollow Farm.  Made famous by the power of Instagram, I was determined to find this beautiful place and see it for my own eyes.  It wasn’t super easy to find, but when we eventually did, we joined some Instagrammer’s and diehard photographers all trying to get the perfect shot.

It’s such a beautiful setting, and mostly unoccupied.  Owned by Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry, I’d really recommend visiting this spot either early morning or late afternoon.  Be prepared for plenty of other tourists and photographers, but believe me it’s worth it, and looks like something out of a storybook (image below taken at Sleepy Hollow).

Our time in Woodstock came to an end only too soon, but heading out of town we made one final stop at Sugarbush Farm.  A three generation farm that produces both cheese and maple syrup, and provides generous taste testings of both.  We of course said yes to the taste testings, and wandered around the farm saying hi to the animals (well I said hi to the animals, it’s a habit of mine, talking to four legged friends!).

Now it was really time to bid farewell to the beautiful town of Woodstock, Vermont and head east to New Hampshire.

Until next time, thanks for reading :o)
