Hiring A Boat In Amalfi

We’d made a list of things we wanted to do for this trip, and hiring a boat in Amalfi was a priority.  Having not got around to it on a previous visit, we were determined to book this in and spend an afternoon whizzing along the coastline.

It was So.Much.Fun!  Stepping aboard in Atrani (Amalfi’s neighbouring village) on a sunny afternoon, a boat hire employee drove us around to Amalfi, where we met the boat hire boss out in the ocean, and The Boy Next Door signed documents as we bobbed up and down in the sea.  It all felt so gangster ;o)

We’d hired the boat for four hours, plenty of time to drive along the coast to Positano, which is exactly what we did.  TBND took the driver’s seat, whilst I snapped away at the turquoise ocean and his ‘tongue-out concentrating’ face.  Our wee boat was adorable, dwarfed by the many super yachts we passed, and often the victim of rocky wake coming off the ferries speeding by, threatening to hurtle us overboard if we didn’t hold on tight.

I decided to ‘take the wheel’, and guys, there’s a girl racer in me.  I grew up in New Zealand, where the car culture is BIG, and I owned a racy looking Subaru Impreza, with a sports exhaust and 17 inch alloy wheels (sorry ladies if I’ve lost you at this point!).  Once I took control of driving the boat, there was no stopping me.  I accelerated full speed ahead and sped along the Amalfi coastline like a boss.

Pulling up in Positano, we dropped anchor, soaked up the sunshine, and munched on fresh fruit.  I mean, was this even real life?  It was one of those ‘pinch me’ moments, sitting on the boat whilst staring back at the picturesque view of Positano.

The afternoon heat was strong, so we motored over to a bay where the water was that blue/green shade you only see in travel images and wonder if it actually exists.  It does.  In Amalfi.  Jumping off the boat, we cooled down in the sea, before reluctantly climbing back aboard to head back towards Amalfi.

We pulled into the docking station in Atrani, having spent four hours of bliss on the ocean.  Hiring a boat in Amalfi is one of the best ways to spend an afternoon!  Don’t miss this adventure, if you’re heading to this stunning Italian coastline.

  1. This seems, amazing!
Would you recommend the private boat rental like you did, over a boat tour guide for somone that’s never drove a boat before?
    Also, which is less expensive?

    • Hi Courtney! I’m not sure exactly how much the boat tours are, and we picked up our boat in Atrani which is slightly cheaper to rent from than Amalfi. From memory I think we might have paid around 100 euro’s for 4 hours. It sounds a lot, but it is totally worth it! Driving the boat is super easy, you don’t need any previous experience, it’s a matter of turning it on and off, steering and accelerating! Friends of mine went to Atrani earlier in the year and we insisted they get a boat rental, they did and it was the highlight of their trip!
